KITCHENER-WATERLOO JOBS

Position: Organic Flower Farm Helper
Organization: Garden Party Flower Farm
Location: St. Agatha, Kitchener-Waterloo Region, Ontario

Our Farm

We are an organic flower farm operating on 4 acres adjacent to the St. Agatha forest (ESPA). We grow over 200 types of specialty cut flowers. We sell flowers in different channels: wholesale to designers/florists in Toronto and KW, bulk flowers for people doing their own weddings and events, floral bouquet subscriptions and PYO flowers for flower lovers everywhere. In addition in 2020, we are launching a full service wedding designs. Garden Party ran a certified organic CSA for many years, and since 2015 we have turned our attention to specialty cut flowers. Special projects for the 2020 season include building a additional cooler space, renovating one of the studios and planting a new field of perennials.

Our Team

Lead Farmer — Theresa Schumilas — does all of the farm planning and marketing, most harvesting, post-harvest handling, seeding and transplanting.

Lead Designer — Deb Jasinski — takes care of bridal consultations, wedding/event planning, floral installations and design work. She also does some harvesting and leads many of our workshops.

Farm Hand — Peter Jantzi — takes care of floral deliveries (although we are looking for a replacement for this), does most of the tractor work on the farm, and will be leading the renovations in 2020.

Volunteers — We host 4 ‘work bees’ annually at peak times, and usually draw a team of 6 – 10 people to work for the day in exchange for plant material and flowers.

About this Position

Applicants should have at least 1 (and preferably more) full season's experience on a flower or vegetable farm, efficient field skills and great stamina. Must have quick hands, positive attitude, strong observation skills and ability to see tasks through start to finish. Tractor experience and skill with tools & equipment are not necessary. Experience with cut flowers is not necessary. Expect the work to be physically and mentally demanding. Strong back and knees are essential. Primary tasks:

  • Seeding in trays and potting up small seedlings/plugs (greenhouse work)
  • Preparing fields by removing dead plant material from last season and laying landscape fabric for new seedlings
  • Planting seedlings, sowing seeds, and weeding rows of flowers
  • Some flower harvesting (likely only 2-3 hrs/week – don’t assume this is the primary work)
  • Hoophouse work (irrigation, netting, weeding)

Hours & Remuneration

20 – 25 hrs/week from early April to the end of October

You can choose your own workdays, but not Sundays, and Monday must be one of your days.

2 weeks vacation – needs to be booked in advance so we can fill in.

$15/hr starting salary, but this is negotiable with sufficient experience. A year end bonus of $200 for staying until the end of October.

Extras

  • Free flowers for your own table.
  • Pool Access
  • A space to grow some vegetables for yourself on your own time if you want

If you are entrepreneurial, and want to sell flowers in a different channel from those we’ve got covered (like at a market, or in your own flower subscription service, or to worksites, or designed events you do…) you can pick and use our flowers and we’ll split sales 50:50.

As this is a paid position, we do not offer any formal or deliberate education. However, you are free to use our extensive ecological farming library and ask us questions while we work.

To Apply

Send resume and a letter outlining your relevant work and farming experiences, as well as your motivations for working with us to: tschumilas@rogers.com before February 15!

Only Canadian citizens/permanent residents or those with legal Canadian work permits will be considered.
