Job Title: Communications Coordinator
Organization: Meal Exchange
Location: anywhere in Canada (working remotely)

DATE: August 17th, 2020 - January 26th, 2021
HOURS: 12 hours/week
WAGE: $15/hour

Meal Exchange is a nationally registered charity that has inspired students in Canada to help build healthy, just and sustainable food systems for over 25 years. Job Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Communications Lead, the Communications Coordinator will work with the national office team to enhance the outreach and communications of Meal Exchange. The Communications Coordinator’s main role will be managing social media channels and authoring e-newsletters for the organization. The Communications Coordinator will also support coordinating digital engagement opportunities, web updates, internal communications, media engagement, graphics, and the development of an organizational communications strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage Meal Exchange’s social media channels and e-newsletters
  • Coordinate digital engagement opportunities (videos, Slack messaging, events & activities) for a national network of students
  • Support website changes, including updating, authoring and editing existing content
  • Support media engagement efforts to increase the reach of our work’s impact
  • Collaborate with Meal Exchange’s graphic designer to create engaging materials and resources for various platforms
  • Support with internal communications for Meal Exchange
  • Collaborate with the national team to develop an organizational communications strategy to most effectively communicate Meal Exchange’s work and impact

Desired Skills:

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to synthesize complex information into accessible language, particularly for online communication for diverse audiences
  • Experience with developing newsletter or similar online content
  • Highly organized, motivated and detail-oriented
  • Able to work both independently and collaborate with others
  • Experience with a variety of online platforms (Social media, Mailchimp, Hootsuite, Squarespace/Nation Builder)
  • Ability to work independently, multi-task, manage deadlines, and thrive in a fast-paced office with a large team distributed across the country
  • Interest in food systems, food justice and student leadership
  • Billingualism (English/French) is an asset

Funding for this position is through Canada Summer Jobs, a successful candidate must meet the following requirements:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment*
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment**; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

*The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.

**International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible. As the objective of the Canada Summer Jobs program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student's time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.
